Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's hockey team defeated Southern Maine, 3-1, Sunday afternoon, completing a weekend sweep of Huskies in ECAC East conference action.
After a scoreless first period the Crusaders jumped on the board at 2:20 in the second when freshman Meghan Donovan (Reading, Mass.) netted her first collegiate-goal with help from co-captains Meghan Mahoney (Utica, N.Y.) and Kathleen Remsberg (Arlington, Mass.).
Holy Cross moved to an early 2-0 lead after junior Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) notched a power play game-winning goal, her fourth of the season, at 9:29 in the second. Freshman Shauna Pires (Falmouth, Mass.) and Mahoney were credited with the assists.
The Huskies opened the third period with a goal from sophomore Kristen Pappolla (Pelham, N.H.) at 3:19, with assists by freshman Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and sophomore Jennifer Cordone (Fulton, N.Y.).
Sophomore Melissa Flannagan (Manchester Ctr., Vt.) scored an insurance goal for the Crusaders three minutes into the third with help from sophomore Cathryn O'Connor (Milton, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Oplinger (Summit, N.J.).
The Crusaders return to Hart Center on Tuesday, Dec. 7 when they host Castleton State at 7 p.m.
