Holy Cross crushes Castleton State

Worcester, Mass. - Freshman Samantha Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) and junior Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) each registered hat tricks, including two short-handed goals by Wetherbee, to lead the Crusaders over Castleton State , 11-4, Tuesday night at the Hart Center.
The Crusaders opened up the first period with a pair of goals in the first five minutes. Rush put Holy Cross on the board 2:32 when she scored from the right side of the crease with help from junior Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.). Mahoney put the Crusaders up 2-0 at 5:14 in the first when she scored a power play goal from just inside the blue line. Junior co-captain Kathleen Remsberg (Arlington, Mass.) assisted on the play.
Wetherbee netted a short-handed goal at 8:51 to increase the Crusader margin by three with help from freshman Parnell Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.).
Holy Cross would score a fourth time at 16:30 in the first when Bloxson fired a shot from the right wing that was saved by the Spartans' netminder Kalla Robb (Farmington, N.H.) that rebounded directly to Rush, who shot it back to the net for her second goal of the game. Senior co-captain Molly Corkey (Salisbury, Conn.) was also credited with the assist.
The Spartans jumped on the board quickly in the second with a goal by junior Danielle Woodruff (Bloomingdale, N.Y.) just 58 seconds into the stanza, but the Crusaders answered with a goal at 2:19 when Rush netted her third goal of the game for her first collegiate-hat trick. Sophomore Shara Conroy (Londonderry, N.H.) assisted on the play.
Freshman Abby Greenbaum (Kittaning, Pa.) scored for the Spartans at 3:53 in the second with help from Cortney Kiewel (Gardner, Mass.) and Woodruff.
The Crusaders would answer with three more goals in the second period to put Holy Cross up 8-2, including one by sophomore Christine O'Hara (Burnsville, Minn.) and two by Wetherbee, of which one was a power play goal, to notch her third career-hat trick.
Castleton State opened the third period with two goals in a 27 second time span. Freshman Stephanie Purinton (Gansevoort, N.Y.) netted a goal for the Spartans at 2:00, as Woodruff followed with her second of the game at 2:27. Greenbaum was credited with both assists.
Holy Cross went on to stun the Spartans three more times in the third stanza, including two in 17 seconds. Murphy netted her second goal of the season at 9:40 in the period, as O'Hara answered with her fourth goal of the season at 9:57. Freshman Katherine Falkowski (East Sandwich, Mass.) scored the last point of the game with 1:09 remaining for her second goal of the season.
Sophomore Dianna Muth (Lee, N.H.) made her first appearance this season and halted eight shots on net for the win, as teammate Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) made three saves in the first period. Robb made 11 saves in 20 minutes of action for the Spartans, while Rachel Dunn (Marquette, Mich.) made 23 saves during the last two stanzas.
The Crusaders take a break from action for the holidays and return to the ice Friday-Saturday, Jan. 7-8, when they host UMass Boston for a two-game series, with Friday's game starting at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday's at 2 p.m.
