MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Freshman Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) scored two goals as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated Wesleyan, 5-2. The Crusaders improve to 10-0-1 (7-0-1 ECAC) while the Cardinals fall to 1-5-1 (0-3-0 NESCAC).
Holy Cross got on the board early, scoring two goals in the first period. Junior Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) scored the first goal of the evening at the 8:17 mark off an assist from freshman Amy Pfund (Tenafly, N.J.) and junior Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, Ontario). Less than one minute later, at the 8:58 mark, Hochkins gave Holy Cross the 2-0 lead when she scored her eighth goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) and senior Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.). Wesleyan's Heather Lindgren scored at the 18:47 mark to bring the score within one, 2-1.
The second period was held scoreless until the 18:07 mark when Wesleyan's Sena Ito scored the power play goal to tie the game, 2-2.
Holy Cross regained its lead at the 8:26 mark in the third period when freshman Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) scored the game winning power play goal off an assist by Hochkins. Sophomore Christina D'Ambrogio (Toronto, Ontario) scored at the 17:48 mark to give Holy Cross the 4-2 lead followed by Hochkin's second goal of the evening at the 18:27 mark to end the game, 5-2.
Freshman Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) made the start in net for the Crusaders and earned her fifth win of the season. Dominick-Sobol had 26 saves, while Wesleyan goalkeeper Rachel Stemerman had 38. Holy Cross outshot Wesleyan 43-28 and went 1-3 on the man-advantage, while Wesleyan went 1-5.
Holy Cross returns to action after the winter break when it takes on Colby in Waterville, Maine on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
