SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) scored two goals as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated St. Michael's, 4-1. The Crusaders improve to 9-0-1 (7-0-1 ECAC), while the Purple Knights fall to 1-8-0 (0-7-0 ECAC).
The first period was dominated by strong defense as Holy Cross had 11 shots on goal, none able to find the net. Holy Cross and St. Michael's closed out the first period in a stalemate, 0-0.
The Crusaders were held scoreless until the closing seconds of the second period, at the 19:54 mark, when sophomore Christina D'Ambrogio (Toronto, Ontario) scored off an assist from freshman Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) and junior Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.
Holy Cross came alive in the third period, scoring three goals. Kratchmer scored the unassisted game-winning goal at the 5:53 mark and then scored again at 12:21 to give the Crusaders the 3-0 lead. St. Michael's Shannon Murphy got the Purple Knights on the board when she scored at the 12:52 mark. Holy Cross got one final goal in the closing seconds, at the 19:55 mark, when junior Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) scored a power play goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) made the start in net for the Crusaders. Gallant had 14 saves, while St. Michael's goalkeeper Alysia Goldman had 37. Holy Cross outshot St. Michael's 41-15 and went 1-5 on the man-advantage, while St. Michael's went 0-4.
Holy Cross travels to Middletown, Conn. when it takes on Wesleyan on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
