Worcester, Mass. - Sophomore Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) scored two goals as the Holy Cross women's hockey team defeated Wesleyan, 3-2, at the Hart Center on Wednesday night. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 6-2-1 overall (3-1-0ECAC), while the Cardinals fall to 1-6-0 (0-4-0 NESCAC).
In the first period neither team scored. Holy Cross had 14 attempts at goal while Wesleyan had seven.
Sophomore Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario) scored the first goal of the night putting the puck in the net 3:13 into the second period with assists by sophomore Kathryn Kelley (Dedham, Mass.) and freshman Colleen Krmpotich (Minneapolis, Minn.). Jessica Fischer of Wesleyan tied the game up with a goal during a power play, 8:59 into the period. O'Connor answered back with a goal at 14:09 to give the Crusaders the lead. Kelley and senior Allie DeAngelis (Framingham, Mass.) gave her the assist. Holy Cross had 10 shots on goal, while Wesleyan had five.
The third period proved to be exciting when O'Connor increased the Holy Cross lead with her second goal scored at 9:22 with an assist by junior Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) Adrienne Shea of Wesleyan put the puck in the net 17:52 into the period bringing the score to 3-2, but that would be it for goals for the night. Holy Cross had four shots while Wesleyan had six.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) made 16 saves in the game to earn the win and improve to 4-2-1 on the season. Rachel Stemerman stopped 25 shots for Wesleyan. The Crusaders outshot the Cardinals by a 28-18 margin.
The Crusaders return to action again January 8, when they host Colby at the Hart Center. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
