Holy Cross Women's Ice Hockey Downs Castleton State 5-1

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) scored two goals as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated Castleton State, 5-1, in ECAC East action Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center. The Crusaders improve to 5-0-1 (5-0-1 ECAC) while the Spartans fall to 2-5-0 (2-4-0 ECAC).

Holy Cross scored the only goal of the first period when junior Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) took a pass from junior Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) and scored from in the slot. The goal, scored at the 16:24 mark, was O'Connor's first goal of the season. Holy Cross closed out the first period ahead, 1-0.

The Crusaders scored early in the second period, at the 00:57 mark, when freshman Kylee McIntosh (Stratford, Ontario) sent a pass up the ice to Garat for the breakaway goal. Garat's first goal of the season, first of her career gave Holy Cross the 2-0 lead. Castleton State's Mary Anne Diehm scored at the 2:58 mark to cut the lead in half. Holy Cross responded with a power play goal at the 5:19 mark. Senior Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) scored her sixth goal of the season from in the slot to give the Crusaders the 3-1 lead.

Holy Cross controlled the third period, scoring two goals to solidify the win. Sophomore Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) scored her eighth goal of the season at the 8:47 mark off a rebounded shot from freshman Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.). The Crusaders scored the fifth goal of the game when Garat took a pass from senior Amy McGhee (Newtown, Pa.) in the crease with eight seconds remaining for the score and ending the game 5-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper, Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, British Columbia) made the start in net for the Crusaders. Atkinson had 12 saves, while Castleton goalkeeper Kalla Robb had 33. Holy Cross out shot Castleton 38-13 and went 2-5 on the man-advantage, while Castleton went 0-2.

Holy Cross returns to the Hart Center on Tuesday, Nov. 25, for a 7:00 p.m. ECAC East game against Sacred Heart.
