Worcester, Mass.- Junior Casey Harvell (Lexington, Mass.) assisted on two goals as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated St. Michael's 3-1, in conference action Sunday afternoon at the Hart Center Rink. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 4-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the ECAC East, while St. Michael's drops to 3-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the ECAC East.
Holy Cross wasted little time getting on the board scoring just 1:31 into the first period when junior Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.) scored off a pass from Harvell and junior Katie Falkowski (East Sandwich, Mass.). The Crusaders outshot the Purple Knights 11-5 for the period.
Junior Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) increased the Crusader lead with a short-handed goal at the 9:38 mark of the second period. Freshman Lisa Wilson (Corunnda, Ontario) and Harvell were credited with the assists. For the period, the Crusaders outshot the Purple Knights 15-5.
Sophomore Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) scored at the 7:54 mark of the third period to make it 3-0. Freshman Erica van DeGraff (Guelph, Ontario) and junior Parny Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.) assisted on the goal. The Purple Knights ruined the Crusaders' shutout bid when Jess Tourville scored at the 14:44 mark of the third period. Assists were given to Meghan Sweezey and Shannon Murphy.
Crusader netminder sophomore Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alberta) stopped 17 shots, while Melanie Cullen halted 33 shots for St. Michael's. On the day, the Crusaders outshot St. Michael's, 36-18.
The Holy Cross women's hockey team is back in action on Tuesday, November 28 when it host Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m. in the Hart Center Rink.
