Worcester, Mass. - After getting on the board first, the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team (2-1-0, 2-1-0 ECAC) was unable to hold onto the lead as New England College (3-1-0, 2-1-0 ECAC) came back to win the game, 3-1.
Just under five minutes into the first frame, Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) flipped the puck past Pilgrim goaltender Amie Simmons from just in front of the crease to give the Crusaders at 1-0 lead. Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) assisted on the play.
The Crusaders would hold the lead by a slim margin through the rest of the first period and most of the second period, but New England would score two goals with under seven minutes left. Elizabeth Ross and Marissa Porri would score at 13:31 and 17:34, respectively in the second. The goal by Porri would prove to be the game winner. Kirsten MacKenzie would later add a power play goal in the third period to increase the Crusader deficit to 3-1.
Junior goalie Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) made 31 saves on the afternoon, while her counterpart Simmons turned aside 28 shots.
The Crusader women will be back in action tommorrow at home against the Hawks from Saint Anselm. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Hart Center.
