Worcester, Mass. - Junior Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) scored two goals and freshman Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) scored the game-winner as the Holy Cross women's hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 5-3, this afternoon at the Hart Center in non-conference action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-0-1 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 2-6-1 overall.
Sacred Heart would take an early lead in the first period with a goal by Kristina Hankins at 8:44. Couzin would score at 13:41 to tie the teams up. Couzin stole the puck in the Pioneers' zone and went on a breakaway and fired the puck into the net.
The Crusaders would then take the lead when freshman Emily Henry (Lumsden, Saskatchewan) would score a goal on the power play off an assist by Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario). Henry blasted a shot from the blue line which deflected off a defender into the net. The goal is Henry's first collegiate goal. Sacred Heart responded with two goals to once again take the lead. With three seconds left Couzin tied the game at 3-3 with her second breakaway goal of the game.
At 1:17 into the third period Kratchmer scored the game-winner for her first collegiate goal. Senior Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.) added a goal at the 10:55 mark for the 5-3 final score.
Freshman Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) made 29 saves to improve to 1-0-1 on the season. Sarah Perry stopped 21 shots for the Pioneers. Holy Cross had 26 shots and went 1-3 on the power play, while the Pioneers had 32 shots and went 0-3.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday, November 16th when they travel to Manchester, N.H to take on St. Anselm at 7:00 p.m.
