WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) recorded her first career hat trick as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated Nichols, 10-0, Tuesday night. The Crusaders start the 2008-2009 season 1-0 overall (1-0 ECAC), while the Bison fall to 0-1 overall (0-1 ECAC).
Holy Cross did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. Junior Kathryn Kelley (Dedham, Mass.) scored the first Crusader goal of the season at the 7:27 mark. Hochkins then put the Crusaders up 2-0 when she scored her first goal of the evening a minute later (8:22).
In the second period Holy Cross put the game out of reach for Nichols, scoring six goals. Junior co-captain Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario) scored the first two goals of the period, at the 00:22 and 6:29 mark, to give Holy Cross the 4-0 lead. Junior Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) and sophomore Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) each scored in the second period for Holy Cross before Hochkins put her second goal of the evening in the net. Kratchmer scored again in the closing seven seconds to give Holy Cross the 8-0 lead.
The Crusaders continued to control the game in the third period. Senior Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) scored her first goal of the season at the 8:20 mark and Hochkins scored her third and the Holy Cross final goal of the game at the 10:54 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) earned the shutout with 10 saves. Nichols goalkeepers Melissa Mansfield and Christine Mazza combined for 10 goals and 29 saves.
Holy Cross returns home for the 2008-2009 season opener at the Hart Center on Sunday, Nov. 9 when they take on ECAC opponent Manhattanville at 2:00 p.m.
