WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team was victorious in their final game of the 2005-06 season as they defeated Saint Michael's 4-1. The Crusaders took third place in the ECAC Open tournament with the win.
Junior Christine O'Hara (Burnsville, Minn.) got the scoring starting in the first frame by knocking home the rebound off a shot by freshman Amy McGhee (Newtown, Pa.). Sophomore Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) also assisted on the play.
Just 37 seconds in the the second period, senior Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) netted what proved to be the game winner when she made a great individual move from the left faceoff circle and put a wrister by Annice Mason. The power play goal was assisted by fellow senior Kate Remsberg (Arlington, Mass.) and Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.).
The Purple Knights would cut the lead in half, 2-1, when Gabrielle Bourgeois put a wrister in the corner of the net when freshman Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alberta) stumbled while skating out to cut down the angle.
With 5:45 left in the game, sophomore Parny Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.) would add an insurance goal to put the Crusaders up 3-1 when her shot trickled by Mason's pad and reached the net. Bloxson and sophomore Allie DeAngelis (Framingham, Mass.) assisted on the play.
DeAngelis would add another late Holy Cross goal just under two minutes later to push the final margin to 4-1. She scored off passes from sophomores Rush and Katherine Falkowski (East Sandwich, Mass.).
Mason would make 44 saves on the afternoon for Saint Michael's in a solid effort. Van Dongen stopped 10 shots through the first two periods in goal for Holy Cross. She was replaced by junior Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) at the beginning of the final period. McCullion only had to make one save to preserve the victory.
Sacred Heart went on to win the championship game of the ECAC Open tournament 2-1 over Saint Anselm. Pioneer goaltender Stephanie Boulay was named Most Valuable Player. Holy Cross senior Kate Remsberg was named to the All-Tournament Team.
