South Burlington, Vt. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team lost to Sacred Heart, 6-2 in the ECAC East Open Semi-Final on Saturday night at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt. The Crusaders will now face St. Michael's in the ECAC Open Tournament's Third-Place game tomorrow morning. Holy Cross drops to an overall record of 14-10-2 on the season as Sacred Heart improves to 7-19-1.
The Pioneers would get on the board 1:42 into the first period with a goal from Michelle Panella. Junior Parny Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.) would answer back by netting a power play goal, with help from freshman Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) and junior Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.), with 5:37 remaining in the period. The teams would head to the locker room knotted at 1-1.
Holy Cross would get their only lead of the day off of a goal from O'Connor 1:33 into the second period. Junior Casey Harvell (Lexington, Mass.) would get the assist. After a number of penalties from both teams, The Pioneers would tie the game at 2-2 with a goal from Gina Arnone with 53 seconds left on the clock in the second stanza.
The Pioneers would score four unanswered goals in the third period to end the game at the final score of 6-2. Arnone would record a hat-trick for Sacred Heart.
Senior Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) turned away 23 shots from the Pioneers, including 13 in the first period. Sacred Heart goalie Stephanie Boulay stopped 21 shots from Holy Cross.
The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will face St. Michael's College at 11:00 am tomorrow. The Crusaders have gone 2-0 over the Purple Knights this season, including a 3-1 victory in Worcester, Mass. and a 3-2 victory in South Burlington, Vt.
