Worcester, Mass. - Junior Parny Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.) netted a unassisted, game-tying goal 3:32 into the third period to give the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team a 2-2 overtime tie with #5 RIT, Sunday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. The Crusaders are 14-9-2 overall this season and 11-7-1 in the ECAC East. RIT is 21-2-2 on the year and 16-1-2 in the conference.
The Tigers would get on the board first at 7:17 into the contest with a goal from Maegan Gaypens. Freshman Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) scored the first Crusader goal of the game with 1:30 left in the first period to bring the game to a 1-1 tie heading into the first break. O'Connor's goal was assisted by junior Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) and freshman Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, Ont. Canada).
Gaypens would score her second goal of the game 50 seconds into the second stanza, putting RIT up 2-1. Neither team would score until Ormiston put the puck past RIT's Nicki Werner with 16:28 left in regulation. The game would eventually end knotted at two goals apiece.
Senior Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) would stop six shots from a powerful RIT offense in the five minute overtime period. McCullion halted 40 shots total on the day, her highest number of saves in a single game this season. Her record is now at 9-5-2 on the year. RIT's Werner made 12 stops in the contest.
The Holy Cross women's ice hockey travels to South Burlington, Vt. and Cairns Arena to compete in the ECAC East Tournament. St. Michael's College will host the annual event.
