RUTLAND, Vt. - Senior Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) each had a goal as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated Castleton, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at the Rutland Regional Fieldhouse in Rutland, Vt. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 20-2-1 (15-2-1 ECAC) while the Spartans fall to 4-18-0 (4-14-0 ECAC).
Couzin got the Crusaders on the board first, scoring the eventual game-winning goal at the 11:25 mark in the first period, assisted by sophomore Colleen Krmpotich (Minneapolis, Minn.). The Crusaders out shot the Spartans 15-4 and went to the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
In the second period, Holy Cross increased its lead to 2-0 when Hochkins scored her 21st goal of the season at the 4:05 mark. Holy Cross continued to control the puck, out shooting Castleton 10-4.
The third period was scoreless as Holy Cross held Castleton to only one shot on goal. The Crusaders had 10 shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net, ending the game 2-0.
Sophomore Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, British Columbia) made the start in net for the Crusaders, earning her eighth win of the season and remaining undefeated (8-0-0). Amanda Hoy (2-9-0) defended the goal for Castleton. Atkinson recorded nine saves and earned her third shut out of the season, while Hoy made 33. The Crusaders out shot the Spartans 35-9 and went 0-6 on the power play opportunity, while the Spartans also went 0-6.
The Crusaders return to the Hart Center on Friday, Feb. 20 for a 7:00 p.m. face off with Plymouth State.
