Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team was defeated by Umass-Boston at the Hart Center on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-2. The Crusaders drop to an overall record of 14-7-1 and 11-6-0 in the ECAC East, while the Beacons improve to 13-9-1 and 10-7-0 in the conference. The Beacons were able to get off to a strong start as Katherine Wall scored 2:32 into the first period, creating a 1-0 deficit for the Crusaders prior to the first break.
No further goals were made until Andrea Ciarletta scored a second goal for Umass-Boston 2:12 into the second period. The two teams battled until Beacon, Casey Turner was able to further the score to 3-0 with a shot into the net. Holy Cross continued to fight hard and their effort paid off as junior Parny Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.) smacked the puck from long distance, past the Beacon defense and goalie Jessica Sams to bring the score to 3-1 with 2:48 left in the second period. The goal was assisted by freshman Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.)
The Crusaders scored their second, and final goal 8:13 into the third period. The shot was made by sophomore Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) and assisted by junior Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) tightening the score to 3-2. Unfortunately, the Crusaders had difficulty finding the back of the net again and the Beacons responded with three unanswered goals, one from Katelyn SawyerLajoie and two from Ciarletta to finish the game.
Senior goalie Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) halted 36 shots from the Beacons. Sams blocked 31 shots from Holy Cross.
The Holy Cross women's hockey team is back in action against Sacred Heart on Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hart Center Rink.
