Purchase, N.Y. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team led early against #6 Manhattanville, but could not hold on as they were defeated 4-3 in Purchase, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders fall to 13-5-1 and to 10-5-0 in the ECAC East. Sixth ranked Manhattanville improves to 15-4-1 on the season and to 13-2-0 in the ECAC East. Holy Cross got an early lead 4:21 into the first period off of a power play goal from freshman Erica van DeGraff (Guelph, Ont. Canada). The Valiants struck back 10:21 later with a goal from Erin Brawley. The score would remain tied at 1-1 heading into the first break.
After back and fourth penalties, Holy Cross would capitalize on Manhattanville being a skater down, scoring a power play goal 8:54 into the second stanza. Junior Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) netted the second Crusader goal of the day with assists from freshmen Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) and Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ont. Canada). Manhattanville netted three unanswered goals, including a power play goal, to give the Valients a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.
Holy Cross junior Allie DeAngelis (Framingham, Mass.) would score an unassisted goal with 19 seconds remaining in the game, to bring the final score to 4-3 in favor of Manhattanville.
Senior Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) stopped a total of 31 shots for the Crusaders. Her record for the season is at 9-3-1. The Valiants' Karine Turmel halted 22 shots in her ninth win of the season.
The Crusaders travel to Amherst, Mass. to take on Amherst College on Tuesday, February 6 in their final road game of the regular season. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
