WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team (8-11-1, 8-7-0 ECAC) could not overcome the #4 Mahattanville Valiants (18-2-0, 15-1-0 ECAC) on Senior Day at the Hart Center. Danielle Nagymarosi netted a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Valiants to a 7-1 victory over the Crusaders.
The Crusaders got off to a solid start, taking advantage of three early Valiant penalties by scoring on the power play.
Senior Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) made a centering pass to junior Shara Conroy (Londonderry, N.H.), who snuck behind a defender in front of the net. Conroy flipped the puck over the right should of goalie Liane Ortis at the 8:21 mark for her first goal of the season. Senior Kate Remsberg (Arlington, Mass.) also picked up her team-leading 13th assist on the play.
Manhattanville would even the score at 1-1 just over four minutes later when Cari Swanger put a wrist shot past freshman Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alberta).
The Valiants would take advantage of their first power play when Jessica Zimmerman netted a breakaway goal just over a minute into the second period. Nagymarosi would add another score at the 16:08 mark to make the score 3-1.
Nagymarosi would go on to net two more consecutive goals to push the Valiant lead to 5-1. She would score a hat trick in the second period alone. Michelle Witz would add another goal late in the second.
Manhattanville would add a third period goal to make the final scored 7-1. Van Dongen would make 36 saves in the loss as Liane Ortis would stop 12 shots for the win.
The Crusaders will hit the road for their final four games of the regular season. Their next game will be on Friday, February 10 at 4:00 p.m. when they travel to Boston to take on UMass-Boston.
