HENNIKER, N.H. - Freshman forward Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) scored her 18th goal of the season as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team topped ECAC East opponent New England College, 2-1, Friday night in Henniker, N.H. With the win, the Crusaders remain unbeaten and improve to 17-0-1 (12-0-1 ECAC) while the Pilgrims fall to 8-8-2 (6-5-2 ECAC).
Hochkins scored the unassisted, shorthanded goal at the 13:54 mark in the first period to put the Crusaders up, 1-0. New England responded three minutes later, at the 17:45 mark, with a goal by Danielle O'Leary assisted by Kaleigh Costello to tie the game, 1-1. The Crusaders put New England goalkeeper Teraysa White to work, outshooting the Pilgrims 13-7 in the first period, but went to the locker room with the score tied 1-1.
The second period was quiet as neither team was able to get past the opposing goalkeeper. Holy Cross controlled the puck, outshooting New England 22-4, but couldn't find the back of the net.
The Holy Cross offense broke the 1-1 tie at the 5:26 mark in the third period when junior Kathryn Kelley (Dedham, Mass.) scored the game winning goal. Kelley took a pass from junior Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) to score her third goal of the season. The Crusaders dominated the remainder of the game, outshooting the Pilgrims 19-5 and winning the game 2-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, British Columbia) made the start in net for the Crusaders, earning her sixth win of the season and remaining undefeated (6-0-0). White suffered the loss for the Pilgrims and falls to 7-8-2. Atkinson made 15 saves, while White made 52. Holy Cross controlled the puck, outshooting New England 54-16. Both teams were unable to convert on the power play, Holy Cross going 0-3 and New England 0-2.
Holy Cross continues ECAC East action on the road Saturday, Jan. 31, traveling to Manchester, N.H. to face off with St. Anselm at 6:00 p.m.
