WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated Trinity, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at the Hart Center. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 15-0-1 (10-0-1 ECAC) while the Bantams fall to 7-4-2 (4-3-1 NESCAC).
Back and forth play, along with strong defense, held the first period scoreless until Holy Cross junior forward Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) scored at the 11:54 mark to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead. O'Connor took a pass in the slot from freshman defenseman Brooke Miller (Falmourth, Mass.) and scored her sixth goal of the season. The Crusaders held Trinity scoreless, ending the first period up 1-0.
Trinity tied the game, 1-1, at the 7:57 mark in the second period when Kim Weiss skated the length of the ice off the breakaway pass from Alexa Guglielmi to score her seventh goal of the season. The Crusaders responded at the 15:03 mark when Garat scored the power play goal and eventual game-winner from in the crease. Garat's goal was assisted by junior Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Emily Henry (Lumsden, Saskatchewan) and gave Holy Cross the 2-1 lead.
The third period was controlled by tough defense as both teams only had six shots on goal. Holy Cross was able to control the Trinity offense and no goals were allowed in the third period. The Crusaders skated away with the 2-1 win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, British Columbia) made the start in net for the Crusaders, earning her fifth win of the season and improving to 5-0-0. Trinity goalkeeper Hilary Novik recorded her first loss of the season, falling to 1-1. Atkinson recorded 18 saves, while Novik had 23. Holy Cross out-shot Trinity 23-18 and went 1-4 on the man-advantage, while Trinity went 0-2.
Holy Cross travels to Purchase, N.Y. on Friday, Jan. 23, for a 7:00 p.m. ECAC East match up with No. 10 Manhattanville.
