South Burlington, Vt. - Junior Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) put in the game winning goal with 3:18 left in the third period to give the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team a 3-2 win over St. Michael's on Friday night. The Crusaders have now won five out of their last six games, improving to 10-3-1 overall and 7-3-0 in the ECAC East. The Purple Knights drop to 4-11-0 on the season and to 2-9-0 in the conference.
The Crusaders trailed early as St. Michael's Melissa Gagne scored a shorthanded goal 1:42 into the first period. Sophomore Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) knotted the scored at 1-1, with assists from freshmen Erica van DeGraff (Guelph, Ont. Canada) and Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, Ont. Canada), 9:37 into the contest. The score stayed tied until, St. Michael's Gagne netted her second goal of the game early in the third stanza.
The Crusaders fought back, scoring two quick goals in the third period. With 4:56 left on the clock, junior Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.) scored the second Holy Cross goal of the night, tying the score at 2-2. Rush would net the final goal of the game to give the Crusaders the victory. Couzin and van DeGraff were credited with the assists on the game winning goal.
Senior goalie Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) stopped 30 shots on her way to her seventh victory of the 2006-2007 campaign. St. Michael's Kristen Salierno halted 36 Crusader shots in the loss.
The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team wraps up their road trip through Vermont with a 3:00 pm game against ECAC East foe Castleton State in Castleton, Vt.
