NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman forward Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) recorded her second hat trick of the season as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated Salve Regina, 4-2, in ECAC East action on Saturday, Jan. 17. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 14-0-1 (10-0-1 ECAC), while the Seahawks fall to 10-5-1 (7-5-0 ECAC).
The Crusaders took the early lead when Emily Henry (Lumsden, Saskatchewan) received a pass from Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) and scored the early goal at the 9:18 mark. Salve Regina tied the score, 1-1, when Kathleen Roche scored her fifth goal of the season at the 13:14 mark. Holy Cross closed out the first period with a 2-1 lead when Hochkins scored her 15th goal of the season at the 18:05 mark off assists from Kratchmer and Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario).
Holy Cross took the 3-1 lead in the second period when Hochkins scored an unassisted goal at the 13:48 mark. Hochkins then scored her third goal of the game at the 15:51 mark, assisted by Kratchmer and Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill). Salve Regina's Kendra Andrie scored at the 19:51 mark to make the score, 4-2.
Strong defense held both teams scoreless in the third period ending the game in the Crusaders favor, 4-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) made the start in net for Holy Cross, making 22 stops and improving to 4-0-1, while Salve Regina goalkeeper Rebecca Simmons made 34 and falls to 5-5-1. The Crusaders outshot the Seahawks 38-24 and went 2-3 on the man advantage, while the Seahawks went 0-3.
Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 20, taking on Trinity at the Hart Center at 7:00 p.m.
