BOSTON, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team scored three goals in the first period and three in the third as it defeated ECAC East opponent UMass-Boston, 6-2, Friday night at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 13-0-1 (9-0-1 ECAC) while the Beacons fall to 7-4-1 (6-2-1 ECAC).
UMass-Boston took the early lead when Kelly Gillis scored at the 6:40 mark to put the Beacons up, 1-0. Holy Cross responded at the 8:22 mark when sophomore Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) scored her 14th goal of the season, assisted by senior Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.). The Crusaders took the 2-1 lead at the 18 minute mark when freshman Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) found the back of the net off assists from Couzin and Kratchmer. Freshman Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) gave the Crusaders the 3-1 lead when she scored at the 18:47 mark off a pass from sophomore Colleen Krmpotich (Minneapolis, Minn.).
The Holy Cross offense was silenced in the second period with UMass-Boston's Maria Nasta scoring the only goal at the 11:13 mark.
The Crusaders regained control of the game in the third period when Hochkins scored her second goal of the evening. Holy Cross went up 5-2 when junior Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) scored at the 13:23 mark and then again at the 16:09 mark to end the game 6-2.
Freshman goalkeeper Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) made the start in net for Holy Cross, improving to 6-0-0. Dominick-Sobol had 19 saves, while UMass-Boston goalkeeper Leah Hallett made 41 stops. The Crusaders outshot the Beacons, 47-21, and went 2-11 on the man-advantage, while the Beacons went 1-6.
Holy Cross continues ECAC East action on the road on Saturday, Jan. 17, traveling to Newport, R.I. to face off with Salve Regina at 8:30 p.m.
