Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's hockey team was defeated by UMass Boston, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center, snapping the Crusaders five-game win-streak.
The Crusaders held the Beacons scoreless for almost the entire first period until sophomore Katie Reardon (Burlington, Mass.) scored from the top of the crease on the man-up advantage with 27 seconds remaining in the stanza. Sophomore Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown, Mass.) and senior Audrey Averill (Smithfield, R.I.) were credited with the assists.
UMass Boston would strike again 10 seconds later to put the score at 2-0 when Ciarletta netted a goal from the top of the slot with help from junior Molly Norton (Milton, Mass.) and Averill.
Junior Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) cut the Beacons lead in half when she scored a power play goal from in front of the crease midway through the second at 11:44. Freshman Shauna Pires (Falmouth, Mass.) and senior tri-captain Meghan Mahoney (Utica, N.Y.) assisted on the play.
The Beacons would score one last time in the third period for a final score of 3-1 when Ciarletta scored from just inside of the left face off circle at 4:10.
Sophomore netminder Amanda Boucher (Billerica, Mass.) made 15 saves for the win, while sophomore Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) halted 28 shots on goal.
The Crusaders visit Rensselaer in an ECAC East game, Saturday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. and returns on Sunday, Jan. 16 for a second game at 1 p.m.
