Worcester, Mass. - Freshman Parnell Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season to just 19 seconds into the extra stanza to help Holy Cross defeat UMass Boston, 3-2, Friday night at the Hart Center in an ECAC East contest.
While on a 5-3 advantage the Ormiston took a shot from the blue line to seal the victory for the Crusaders, in their first overtime game of the season. Senior tri-captain Meghan Mahoney (Utica, N.Y.) assisted on the play.
UMass Boston opened up the scoring with a goal by freshman Kate Webb (Falmouth, Mass.) at 7:42 , with help from sophomore Kerri Zizzo (Medford, Mass.).
Holy Cross would answer with a tally late in the first stanza when junior Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) netted a power play goal from the top of the crease at 16:49. Senior tri-captain Molly Corkery (Salisbury, Conn.) was credited with the assist.
Freshman Samantha Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) used the man-up advantage to put the Crusaders ahead, 2-1, at 15:14 in the second with help from freshman Casey Harvel (Lexington, Mass.) and junior tri-captain Kathleen Remsberg (Arlington, Mass.).
The Beacons would tie the game at 16:11 when junior Molly Norton (Milton, Mass.) scored UMass Boston's only power play goal of the game. Freshman Audrey Deguire (Milford, Mass.) assisted on the play.
Sophomore Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) made 16 saves for the win, while freshman Maggie Carmany (Woods Hole, Mass.) halted 28 shots on goal for UMass Boston.
The Crusaders, who are now 7-5-0 overall and 6-2-0 in ECAC East, return to the Hart Center on Saturday, Jan. 8 to take on UMass Boston, who is 3-7-0 overall and 2-5-0 in ECAC East, in the final game of the two-game series.
