Worcester, Mass. - A flurry of three third period goals brought the Holy Cross women's ice hockey (5-6-1, 5-4-0 ECAC) within one goal of tying a once lopsides game but it was not enough. UMass-Boston (6-3-1, 6-3-0 ECAC) held on for a 7-5 victory behind a hat-trick by junior Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown, Mass.).
Down 6-2 after a dominating second period which saw four Beacon goals on just 11 shots, the Crusaders made a quick spurt in the final frame, scoring three goals within four minutes to pull within one score at 6-5. Senior captain Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) got Holy Cross going with a goal off a feed from sophomore Meghan Donovan (Reading, Mass.) just over three minutes into the third. Senior captain Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) would net one of her two goals on the afternoon under one minute later. Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.) would score the Crusaders' third straight at the 12:31 mark.
However, Holy Cross was unable to tie the game and the Beacons' Kristin Wilson (Grand Forks, N.D.) gave her team a cushion scoring a goal with 1:18 left in the game to make the final 7-5.
UMass-Boston got on the board quickly when Melissa Belmonte (South Boston, Mass.) scored the first of her team's three consecutive goals. Ciarletta would add the next two scores. Kate Remsberg (Arlington, Mass.), a senior captain, would start off the Holy Cross scoring by knocking home her own rebound 11 minutes into the second frame. Bloxson would pick up an assist on the play.
Beacon goaltender Amanda Boucher got her fourth win of the season, making 28 saves. Holy Cross junior goaltender Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) made 26 stops on the afternoon. Both teams combined for 75 shots on goal in the game.
The Crusaders will resume action on Wednesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m. when they take on Amherst College at the Hart Center.
