Rutland, Vt. – The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team returned to the ice on Friday evening at the Rutland Herald Invitational, hosted by Castleton State, and skated to a 4-0 victory over Sacred Heart. Senior captain Caroline English (Dorchester, Mass.) tallied three assists as the Crusaders improved to 8-4-1 on the season. The Pioneers move to 10-9-2.
Sophomore Mary Klimasewiski (Cochester, Conn.) put Holy Cross on the board just 30 seconds into the game when she buried her second goal of the season off assists from sophomore Rebecca Fleming (Newton, Mass.) and English. Sophomore Chelsea Monahan (Cherry Hill, N.J.) doubled the lead with 9:24 remaining in the period on her fourth goal of the season with help from senior Alex Campione (Townsend, Mass.) and junior Emily Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.). Fleming then received passes from English and freshman Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska) for her team-high seventh goal of the season, giving Holy Cross a 3-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.
Holy Cross kept the offensive pressure on in the second period as sophomore Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season on the power play just 5:40 into the stanza. Klimasewiski and English added the assists on the only goal of the period and the Crusaders took a 4-0 lead into the final frame.
The third period went scoreless as sophomore goaltender Krista Manzanares (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) stopped all 22 shots she faced in the game for her second shutout of the season. She improved to 5-2-0 on the season. Sacred Heart netminder Alexius Schutt made 43 saves and is now 6-6-1.
Holy Cross with face Castleton State tomorrow, Jan. 12, in the final of the Rutland Herald Invitational at 3:00 p.m.
