WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross freshman defenseman Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) has been named the ECAC East women's hockey Rookie of the Week as announced by the league. Panarelli tallied two goals in two games this past week to bring her season total to four. When added to her 12 assists this season, Panarelli is now ranked fifth in ECAC East defenseman scoring with 16 points and is the only freshman in the league landing in the top 20. This is the first time Panarelli has received Rookie of the Week honors.
Panarelli scored the fifth goal of the game for Holy Cross with 5:03 remaining in the second period of the Crusaders 7-2 victory over Nichols on Friday, Feb. 10. Against Manhattanville (Feb. 11), she sparked a Crusader comeback by scoring a power play goal just 23 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-1 as the Crusaders rallied to record a 2-2 tie. The Crusaders are now 17-2-3 overall and 13-2-1 in the ECAC East.
Panarelli is the second Crusader to receive Rookie of the Week honors this season as freshman forward Mary Klimasewiski (Cochester, Conn.) took home the award for the week ending Jan. 15.
The Crusaders will close out the regular season with two games on the road beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at St. Michael's for a 4:00 p.m. start. Holy Cross will then take on conference frontrunner Norwich on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1:00 p.m.
