MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Senior forward Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) tallied two goals and one assist, to lead the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Salve Regina at the St. George's School Ice Rink. With the win, the Crusaders open the 2011-2012 campaign at 1-0, while posting a victory in their season opener for the fourth year in a row. The Seahawks begin the season 0-1.
Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead at the 12:07-mark of the first period, when senior forward Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) scored off assists from sophomore defenseman Amanda Gallagher (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Hochkins. Early in the second period, Hochkins made the score 2-0 when she netted an unassisted goal. Hochkins then added her second goal of the night just over eight minutes later off an assist from freshman forward Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.), to conclude the scoring.
Senior goaltender Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted the sixth shutout of her collegiate career for the Crusaders, making 14 saves without allowing a goal to earn the victory. Rebecca Simmons took the loss for Salve Regina, despite making 41 saves.
Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, Nov. 5, when it plays host to Sacred Heart in a 2:00 p.m. game at the Hart Center.
