Women's Hockey Defeated By Sacred Heart, 3-2, In Home Opener
WORCESTER, Mass. – In the home opener Tuesday night the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team fell to Sacred Heart, 3-2. In their second match up this season the Pioneers and Crusaders split results each defeating the other in their home arena. Despite the Crusaders' efforts they suffered their first loss, bringing their record to 2-1-0 overall, while the Pioneers found their first win to improve their record to 1-7-0.
Early in the third period off a rebound, Sacred Heart found the back of the net again to take the lead as just 39 seconds had elapsed in the period. At the 3:50 mark Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) answered the Pioneers' goal, to return the game to a 2-2 tie scoring her second goal of the season. Minutes later Sacred Heart took the lead again off a power play at the 7:57 mark bringing the game to 3-2 on the game-winning goal by Brittany Hartman.
With 42 seconds left in the game the Crusaders pulled junior goalie Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) but were unable to score, leaving the Crusaders with their season's first loss. Sacred Heart narrowly outshot the Crusaders 36-35, while both Dominick-Sobol and Pioneer goalie Alexius Schutt recorded 33 saves. The Crusaders went 0-3 on power plays while Sacred Heart went 1-6 translating the advantage into the game-winning goal in the third period.
Holy Cross returns to the ice for an away contest against UMass-Boston on November 12 in a 4:00 p.m. game.
