BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Three different members of the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team found the back of the net, including senior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) with a hat trick, to defeat Sacred Heart 5-0 in non-conference action Wednesday night in Bridgeport, Conn. With the victory, the Crusaders improve to 2-0-0 overall, while the Pioneers remain winless at 0-6-0.
After a scoreless first period, junior Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) took advantage of a power play at the 6: 13 mark in the second period to score her second goal of the season and give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Kratchmer gave the Crusaders a two goal advantage less than two minutes later when she netted her first goal of the season. Junior goalie Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard to end the second period in favor of Holy Cross 2-0.
Kratchmer and junior Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) each found the back of the net within 30 seconds of each other to give Holy Cross a quick 4-0 lead just ten minutes into the third period. Kratchmer added her third goal of the night with less than two minutes remaining in the third period when she scored the shorthanded goal on an empty net.
Dominick-Sobol earned her first win and shutout of the season to improve to 1-0-0, turning away 32 Sacred Heart shots. Sacred Heart goalie Alexius Schutt allowed four Holy Cross goals, recording 35 saves. Holy Cross went 1-5 on the power play opportunity, while Sacred Heart was unable to convert the man advantage, going 0-5 on the power play. The Crusaders outshot the Pioneers 40-32 en route to the 5-0 win.
Holy Cross opens the 2010-2011 season at the Hart Center on Tuesday, Nov. 9 when it hosts Sacred Heart in a 7:00 p.m. game.
