MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore Caroline English (Dorchester, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in the third period to lead the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Salve Regina Friday night. With the win, Holy Cross starts the season 1-0 overall and picks up its first ECAC East win of the year, while Salve Regina drops to 0-1 overall (0-1 ECAC).
Salve Regina went up 1-0 just over two minutes into the game when Samantha Zitzer scored the first goal of the season. The Seahawks took a 2-0 lead just seven minutes later when Jessica Merritt took advantage of a power play to score the goal. Sophomore Alex Campione (Townsend, Mass.) cut into Salve Regina's lead with her first career goal in the 16th minute of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, junior Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) tied the game when she found the back of the net 12 minutes into the period. English followed Garat with the game-winning goal at the 14:55 mark to give the Crusaders the win.
Senior Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) picked up her first win of the season, allowing two goals and recording 15 saves. Salve Regina's Ali Muehlbronner suffered her first loss of the season, allowing three goals and making 41 saves. Holy Cross outshot the Seahawks 44-17 and went 1-3 on the power play.
Holy Cross continues action away from Worcester, traveling to Sacred Heart on Nov. 3 for a 7:00 p.m. non-league game.
