Crusaders Kick Off The 2010-2011 Season This Week

Schedule: Friday, Oct. 29 at Salve Regina, Newport, R.I., 4:00 p.m. 

  • The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team kicks off the 2010-2011 season on Friday, Oct. 29 when it travels to Newport, R.I. for a 4:00 p.m. game against Salve Regina. The game will be the season opener for both teams.
  • Holy Cross is 19-0-1 all-time against Salve Regina, last defeating the Seahawks by a score of 5-2 in the Crusaders 2009-2010 home-opener at the Hart Center. Senior forward Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) led the Crusaders with a pair of goals.
  • Holy Cross is 7-3-1 all-time in season-opening games. Holy Cross opened the 2006-2007 season against Salve Regina, wining by a score of 10-2.
  • Junior Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) has scored seven goals in her two career season-opening games. In 2008-2009 as a freshman, Hochkins started the season with her first career hat trick in Holy Cross' 10-0 win over Nichols. In 2009-2010 as a sophomore, Hochkins scored four goals in the Crusaders' 6-2 season-opening win over UMass-Boston. Hochkins has recorded six career hat tricks in her first two seasons on the ice for the Crusaders.
  • Head coach Peter Van Buskirk returns 15 letterwinners from a team that went 20-4-2 a year ago, including seniors Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, British Columbia), Christina D'Ambrogio (Toronto, Ontario), Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia), Emily Henry (Lumsden, Saskatchewan), Kratchmer and Colleen Krmpotich (Minneapolis, Minn.).
  • D'Ambrogio, Kratchmer and Hochkins will serve as captains for the 2010-2011 season. The trio will lead the team on and off the ice as they have earned multiple ECAC East academic and performance honors between the three of them. All three played significant time in all 26 games a year ago, combining for 89 points.
  • Van Buskirk will lead from the Holy Cross bench for the 11th season. Van Buskirk has accumulated an impressive 144-98-16 record over 10 seasons as head coach of the Crusaders, including guiding the team to its second consecutive ECAC Open title a year ago.
