WORCESTER, Mass. - The Officers and Governors of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) have announced its major award winners for 2010. Head women's ice hockey coach Peter Van Buskirk was honored with the John "Snooks" Kelley Founders Award. Named after the famed Boston College coach, this award honors those people in the coaching profession who have contributed to the overall growth and development of the sport of ice hockey in the United States. Van Buskirk will be honored at the 2010 AHCA convention in Naples, Fla., April 29-May 2.
Van Buskirk is in his 10th season in as the head coach of the Crusader women's ice hockey team. This year's Crusaders have compiled a 15-3-1 overall record as Van Buskirk has accumulated a 139-97-15 all-time record as head coach of the women's team. Last season, Van Buskirk led the Crusaders to an ECAC East regular season title, an ECAC Open championship, a school record 24 wins (24-2-1) and was named the ECAC East Coach of the Year.
Van Buskirk has been affiliated with the Holy Cross ice hockey program for over 30 years. From 1979-88 and again in 1996-97 he served as the men's head coach. Van Buskirk is Holy Cross' second most successful men's coach, with a record of 167-146-8 in 10 seasons behind the bench.
Holy Cross (15-3-1, 12-1-1 ECAC) returns to the Hart Center on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 6-7 for a 2:00 p.m. game against St. Michael's.
