WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross junior goalie Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) recorded her fifth shutout of the season to lead the women's ice hockey team to a 5-0 victory over ECAC opponent Nichols at the Hart Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 12-0-1 overall (9-0-1 ECAC), while the Bison fall to 1-9-1 on the season (1-7-1 ECAC).
After a sluggish start, Holy Cross was finally able to get the offense going when senior defenseman Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario) passed the puck across the ice to freshman forward Caroline English (Dorchester, Mass.) who scored the Crusaders' first goal from deep in the crease. Holy Cross outshot Nichols 12-3 to end the first period up, 1-0.
Holy Cross added two goals in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Rookie Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, Mass.) skated the length of the ice to score her first goal of the season at the 8:16 mark to give Holy Cross a two goal lead and then junior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) gave Holy Cross a 3-0 lead when she scored a wrap around goal in the closing seconds of the period.
Sophomore Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) netted her 14th goal of the season at the 15:38 mark in the third period to put Holy Cross up, 4-0 and then Kratchmer scored her second goal of the night at the 18:28 mark to end the game 5-0.
Gallant recorded her fifth shutout of the season, improving to 7-0-1. Nichols goalie Melanie Spears suffered the loss, falling to 1-4-0. Gallant recorded seven saves, while Spears stopped 26 Holy Cross shots. The Crusaders went 1-1 on the power play, while Nichols was 0-2. Holy Cross outshot Nichols 31-7.
Holy Cross will hit the road, traveling to No. 8 Trinity College on Tuesday, Jan. 12 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
