Henniker, N.H. - A game winning goal in the third period by sophomore Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) led the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over ECAC opponent New England College Friday afternoon in Henniker, N.H. With the win, Holy Cross picks up its 11th victory of the season and remains unbeaten (11-0-1, 8-0-1 ECAC), while New England falls to 5-5-8 (4-5-0 ECAC).
Senior Kathryn Kelley (Dedham, Mass.) gave Holy Cross a 1-0 lead at the 16:59 mark in the first period when she scored her second goal of the season, assisted by seniors Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) and Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.). The Crusaders were able to keep the Pilgrims off the scoreboard, allowing just four New England shots.
The second period was played to a draw, as Holy Cross was outshot 8-4 by New England. The Pilgrims' Stephanie Spera tied the game, 1-1, at the 11:56 mark in the third period and the game appeared to be heading into overtime before Hochkins scored her 13th goal of the season at the 17:52 mark to give Holy Cross the 2-1 win.
Holy Cross sophomore goalie Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) made the start in net, allowing just one goal and making 24 saves. New England's Teraysa White allowed two goals and recorded 24 saves. Dominick-Sobol improves to 5-0-0, while White falls to 5-8-1. Holy Cross narrowly outshot New England, 26-25, while New England went 1-6 on the power play and Holy Cross went 0-2.
Holy Cross will return home to the Hart Center on Saturday, Jan. 9 with a 2:00 p.m. faceoff with ECAC opponent Nichols.
