BOSTON, Mass. - Four goals by sophomore Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) led the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team to a season opening victory over UMass-Boston Friday night in Boston, Mass. With the win, the Crusaders open the season 1-0-0 (1-0-0 ECAC), while the Beacons fall to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 ECAC).
After UMass-Boston's Alli Greenberg scored in the first period to give the Beacons the brief 1-0 lead, the Crusaders' offense came alive, scoring four goals in the second period to overtake the Beacons. Hochkins got the Holy Cross offense rolling when she scored her first goal of the season at the 6:40 mark to tie the game. Sophomore Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) broke the tie at the 12:04 mark when she took a pass from freshman Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, Mass.) for her first goal of the year and O'Quinn's first point in a Crusader uniform. UMass tied the game 2-2 just 50 seconds later, but Hochkins and Garat each scored again to give Holy Cross the 4-2 lead at the end of the second period.
Hochkins recorded a hat trick just nine minutes into the third period when she scored an unassisted goal. Hochkins added one more at the 15:04 mark when she took a pass from junior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) to score her fourth goal. Hochkins opened up the 2008-2009 season in the same fashion, recording a hat trick in Holy Cross' 10-0 victory over Nichols on November 4.
Sophomore goalkeeper Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) made the start in net for Holy Cross, recording 14 saves. UMass-Boston goalkeeper Leah Hallett made 48 saves. Holy Cross outshot UMass 54-16, while Holy Cross went 1-10 on the power play and UMass went 1-8.
Holy Cross will open the season in Worcester, Mass. at the Hart Center on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it plays host to Salve Regina at 2:00 p.m.
