WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's golf program has named seniors Meghan Doherty (Westerly, R.I.) and Johanna Gavin (Hackettstown, N.J.) as 2010-2011 team captains. This will be the second straight season Doherty and Gavin lead the Crusaders.
Doherty led the Crusaders with an 83.4 average. She was the Holy Cross top finisher at five of the seven meets, including finishing with an impressive sixth place out of 14 at the Mount Holyoke Invitational. Coach Molt was so impressed and confident in Doherty's capabilities that he gave her a unique opportunity, an opportunity that had not been offered to any other female golfer in Holy Cross program history. In October, Doherty competed with the men's team at the Nichols Invitational. In one round of golf, Doherty scored a 93, good enough for a tie with four other competitors for 53rd place individually. Doherty led the team her sophomore season as well with an 83.3 average and had the best score for Holy Cross in all seven competitions. She finished 29th place at the Big South Championship, totaling a score of 252 over three rounds. In addition to her achievements on the course, Doherty was selected to the 2009 Big South All-Academic team for her work in the classroom. As a freshman, she was named the Big South Golfer of the Week once and was a member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. Over the course of her career, Doherty has had the best score for the Crusaders in 16 out of the 20 events in which she has competed.
This past season, Gavin ranked third overall on the team with an average of 88.0. In September, Gavin kicked off the season as the Holy Cross top finisher at the Dartmouth Invitational. Gavin shot a two-round score of 166 to lead Holy Cross to an 18th-place. After being named to the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll the last two years, Gavin was named to the Big-South All-Academic Squad in April. Gavin ranked second on the team last season with an average of 88.5. She had the second best score for the Crusaders as she placed 36th at the Big South Championship with a three-round total of 265. She also had the second best score for Holy Cross in four tournaments last season. As a freshman she was fourth on the team with an 89.8 average.
