Two Holy Cross Field Hockey Players Recognized

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior forward Tara Welch (New Boston, NH) was selected to the 2006 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-Region First Team while senior defender Susie Whelan (Acton, Mass.) was selected to the second team.

Welch set a new school record this season as she totaled 59 career goals and 136 career points and she tied the school all-time second high with 42 points in a season. Welch led the Patriot League with 41 points and 2.05 points per game, 19 goals and 0.95 goals per game and ranks second with 75 shots and 3.75 shots per game. She also ranked second with 59 career goals and tied third with 136 career points. Nationally Welch finished the 2006 season ranked 10th with 0.95 goals per game and 19th with 2.05 points per game. Welch was selected as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and named to the All-League First team this season.

Whelan helped shut down opponents as Holy Cross allowed just 108 shots on goal and recorded five shutouts this season. She tied the school all-time record fourth high with 20 career assists. In the Patriot League Whelan tied fifth with seven assists and ranked seventh with 0.35 assists per game. In addition, Whelan tied second nationally with three penalty strokes. Whelan was previously named to the All-League First Team in the Patriot League.
