Tara Welch, Erin Singleton Win Major Patriot League Awards

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Holy Cross senior forward Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) and sophomore goalkeeper Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) have been honored by the Patriot League for their performances during the 2006 season. Welch was selected as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, while Singleton was named the Patriot League Co-Goalkeeper of the Year. Both players had been named first team All-Patriot League earlier this week. The awards were presented at the Patriot League championship banquet, held on Friday evening at American University.

Welch has played in every game this season, and set new Holy Cross school records for career goals scored (56) and career points scored (130), both of which rank as the second-best totals in Patriot League history. This year, she currently leads the Patriot League in points (36), points per game (1.94), goals (16) and goals per game (0.89), while standing second in both shots (18) and shots per game (3.89). Welch is also tied for 16th in the nation with her 0.89 goals per game, and is tied for 25th in the country with her 1.94 points per game.

Erin Singleton has been named the Patriot League Co-Goalkeeper of the Year.

Singleton currently leads the Patriot League with five shutouts and a 1.40 goals against average, a mark which also ranks 17th nationally. In addition, she stands second in the conference with a .738 save percentage and fifth in saves with 62. Singleton has also posted a 13-5 record in the net this season, while leading the Crusaders to a school record 10 consecutive victories.

Other major awards went to Denise Infante of American (Defensive Player of the Year), Jacque DeMarco of Colgate (Co-Goalkeeper of the Year), Katelyn Nerbonne of Colgate (Rookie of the Year) and Steve Jennings of American (Coach of the Year).

Holy Cross (13-5 overall, 4-1 Patriot League) returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 4, when it takes on Lafayette at 1:30 p.m. in the Patriot League semifinals, to be played at American's William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex.
