Center Valley, Pa. - Holy Cross junior field hockey player Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) has been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, for games through October 30, as announced by league officials this afternoon. This is Welch's first conference award of the season.
A Second Team All-League selection last season, Welch led Holy Cross to two wins this past week after tallying four goals (eight points) in a two game span. Welch scored the game-winning goal on Wednesday in Holy Cross' 1-0 non-conference win over Brown, helping the Crusaders to snap a three-game losing streak. Then on Saturday, Welch scored the game winning goal and recorded her first career hat trick, leading the Crusaders to a convincing 6-0 win over Lafayette. With the win, the Crusaders clinched a spot in this weekend's Patriot League Tournament.
Welch scored all three of her goals on Saturday in the first ten minutes and fifty seconds of the game, as Holy Cross recorded a season-high six goals against Lafayette.
Welch has started in all 18 Holy Cross games this season and leads the team and the Patriot League in goals (17) and total points (41). She also has four game-winning goals this season and is ranked third on the team and eighth in the league in assists (seven assists). Her 41 points this season is the second best single-season mark in Holy Cross history, just one point behind current HC assistant coach Ali Roberts Hawk, who tallied 42 points during the 1998 season. Welch is also currently tied for 10th all-time on the Patriot League charts in goals (38).
Holy Cross closed out regular season play with two straight wins stands at 9-9 overall. With a 3-2 mark in conference play, the Crusaders are the third seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will play second-seeded Bucknell at 1:30 on Saturday, November 5 in Washington, D.C. Earlier this season, Bucknell defeated Holy Cross, 3-2 in overtime.
