Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team was voted second by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors in this season's conference preseason poll, as announced today by league officials. The Crusaders, who are coming off an 11-8 (3-2/third Patriot League) campaign a year ago, received 32 total votes, trailing only American University's 50 votes.
Despite the fact that the Crusaders did not advance to the Patriot League Tournament championship game for the first time in three years (4-2 loss to Colgate in the semifinals), the team is returning 12 letterwinners and six starters this season, including three All-League performers in senior captains Jenna Cook (Walpole, Mass.) and Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio), and junior forward Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.).
Last season, Cook finished the season ranked second in the League in total points (33) after a 12-goal, nine-assist campaign. The senior forward also averaged 0.47 assists per game, which tied for second in the League rankings. Welch, who tallied 31 points in 2004, including 14 goals, is also returning to the HC front line. Her 0.78 goals per game average was second-best in the League last year.
Defensively, Kuhn will be back in the cage for the Crusaders. The Ohio native led the league in shutouts (eight) and finished the season second in the league in goals against average (1.47) last season, while posting an .818 save percentage with 126 saves.
In addition to its 50 votes, defending Patriot League regular season and tournament champion, American, also received 10 first place votes. Just one vote separated the third and fourth slots, which are occupied by Colgate (28 votes) and Lehigh (27 votes). Both teams also received one first place vote each. Bucknell was voted to finish fifth with 25 votes and Lafayette was picked sixth with 18 votes.
The Crusaders start the 2005 season with a 6:00 p.m. home game against Siena on Tuesday, August 30. Patriot League competition for the Crusaders begins on Saturday, October 1, with a 12:00 p.m. match-up with Colgate.
