WORCESTER, Mass. - The College of the Holy Cross has named Susie Whelan as the assistant field hockey coach, as announced by head coach Ali Hawk and Athletic Director Richard Mr. Regan, Jr. Whelan, a 2007 Holy Cross graduate, served as last season's interim assistant coach.
"Susie is a great addition to the program. Her enthusiasm, energy, and willingness to do everything will be a great asset to us," said Hawk. "She was a great player, a leader, and has a great work ethic. She has already brought those attributes into her new role as assistant."
During her senior year, Whelan was named to the 2006 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-Region Second Team. Whelan tied second nationally with three penalty strokes and also tied the school all-time record fourth high with 20 assists.
In 2005, she was named to the Second Team All-Patriot League and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. She finished her junior season ranked third in program's history for most assists in a single season (13 assists) and led the team in both interceptions (104 interceptions) and tackles (64 tackles).
In 2004, she finished the season ranked fourth on the team in scoring with five goals and 10 points. Whelan also finished the season ranked fourth on the team in tackles (31 tackles) and fifth on the team in interceptions (54 interceptions).
In 2003, she was the only freshman player to start all 20 games and finished her debut season ranked second on the team in interceptions (70) and sixth on the team in tackles (36 tackles) Whelan also recorded three defensive saves.
