Worcester, Mass. - Senior Christina Zorzi (Barre, Vt.) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Brown University in a non-conference match-up Tuesday evening at the Hart Astro Turf. Holy Cross closes out the regular season with an 11-7-0 (3-2-0 PL) mark, while Brown dips to 5-10-0 (2-4-0 Ivy).
The Crusaders got on the board first when junior Jenna Cook (Walpole, Mass.) dribbled to the baseline and flicked the ball back to Zorzi, who gathered the pass and rifled a shot past Brown goalkeeper Kristen Hodavance to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Sophomore Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) then gave the home team a 2-0 cushion just 10 minutes into the second half when she settled a Zorzi pass and beat Hodavance to extend the lead. The Bears came back with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the game when sophomore Samantha Lloyd solved Crusader keeper Sony Kuhn to bring the visitors within one, but the Holy Cross defense was able to hold off a furious Brown attack late in the game to preserve the win.
Brown fought hard throughout the game and outshot Holy Cross 14 to 4; 10 to 1 in the second stanza. The Bears also had a 10 to 6 advantage on penalty corners. But Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a big game in net and came up with nine saves on the night to register her 11th win. Hodavance played 46 minutes and had 2 stops for the Bears. Senior keeper Katie Noe came in in relief to finish out the game.
The third-seeded Crusaders take on second-seeded Colgate on Saturday, November 6 in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament. The tournament will be held at Colgate University due to top-seeded American's field conditions. Game time is 1:00 p.m. The winners of the two semifinal games move on to the Championship game on Sunday, November 7th at noon.
