Worcester, Mass. - Junior Jenna Cook scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 4-0 win over the University of Rhode Island in a non-conference match-up on Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders have now won their past 3 games and improve to 10-6 overall, while the Rams fall to 4-12 on the season.
Cook (Walpole, Mass.) got things going early in the first when she gathered a pass off of a penalty corner and lifted a shot over the head of URI goalie Jen Perry just seven minutes into the game. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) scored her 12th goal of the season when she directed a nice Torrey Shillieto (West Brookfield, Mass.) pass into the back of the net to put the home team up, 2-0.
The Crusaders went into halftime with the two-goal lead, but added to it just ten minutes into the second stanza when Cook tapped in a loose ball in front of the net after Meg Ryan's (Lake Forest, Ill.) initial attempt was stopped just before it crossed the line, by a URI defender. With the tally, Cook also registered her 12th tally of the year.
Freshman Carolyn Connelly (Greenland, N.H.) rounded out the Crusader scoring with her first collegiate tally after a centering pass from Cook.
Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio) made 6 saves on the day to record her 8th shutout, and her second in as many days. Perry had 6 saves in the losing effort.
