Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team used three second half goals to defeat visiting Lafayette, 3-0, in a Patriot League match-up at a cold and windy Hart Astro Turf on Saturday afternoon. Holy Cross improves to 9-6 overall, 3-2 in conference play, while the Leopards drop to 4-11 (1-3). Sophomore midfielder Susie Whelan (Acton, Mass.) put the home team up 1-0 on an unassisted tally in the 44th minute of play when she received a pass off of a penalty corner and rifled a shot past Lafayette goal keeper Jill Lambert.
About 15 minutes later, junior Jenna Cook's (Walpole, Mass.) shot to the top shelf found its way into the back of the net after it was deflected off a Lafayette defender at the 59 minute mark. Sophomore Laura Cohen (Summit, N.J.) rounded out the Crusader scoring with 7.6 seconds left in the game after a nice centering pass from fellow sophomore Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.).
The two teams played a scoreless first half, with both squads only managing 2 shots a piece. Holy Cross dominated the remainder of the game, however, registering 13 second half shots, to go along with 5 penalty corners.
Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio) was tested twice in each half, and had four saves on the day for the Crusaders. Lambert made eight stops for the Leopards.
Holy Cross hosts the University of Rhode Island, tomorrow, October 24th on Senior Day. Game time is 2 p.m.
