Worcester, Mass. - Sophomore Susie Whelan (Acton, Mass.) scored less than five minutes into the game and senior Christina Zorzi (Barre, Vt.) added two insurance goals to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Bucknell University in a Patriot League contest on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders improve to 7-4 overall (2-1-0), while the Bison dip to 5-8 (1-2-0). At the 30:34 mark in the first, Whelan took a pass from senior co-captain Laura Potts (Windham, N.H.), and beat Bison goalkeeper Liz Jordan for an early 1-0 Crusader lead. Bucknell fought its way back, registering 4 penalty corners in a span of two minutes, but each attempt at the Holy Cross goal was cleared away.
Zorzi picked up her 4th goal of the season with just 3.2 seconds left in the first half when she blasted a low shot to the left corner past Jordan. Zorzi then added her second tally of the day with a little over 20 minutes remaining in the game when she collected a Jenna Cook (Walpole, Mass.) pass in front of the net and put it away.
The Crusaders dominated most of the game, blasting 21 shots at Bucknell keepers Jordan and Emily Groendyke, who came in to play 9:12 of relief in the second half. The hosts also had 18 penalty corner chances to 8 Bucknell attempts.
Junior keeper Sony Kuhn, the defending Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, made 9 saves on the afternoon to record her league-leading 5th shutout of the season.
Holy Cross hosts the University of Maine tomorrow (Sunday, October 10th) in a 2:00 p.m. tilt with the Blackbears.
