Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team opened its season with a convincing win Tuesday night, defeating Siena College, 3-0 in front of a crowd of 200 at the Hart Center Astro Turf field.
Holy Cross senior forward Christina Zorzi (Barre, Vt.) scored the only goal the Crusaders would need, tipping in a loose ball seven minutes into the second half. Siena goalkeeper Kristen Heyde (Somers, N.Y.) made a valiant effort, turning away two shots before Zorzi beat her after a scuffle in front of the net.
Ten minutes later, the Saints would see their first and only scoring opportunity, a breakaway chance for Traci Baldwin (Niskayuna, N.Y.), turned away by a diving Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio). The junior goalkeeper recorded one save for the shutout victory.
Sophomore Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) then added an insurance goal for the Crusaders off a pass from junior Jenna Cook (Walpole, Mass.) later in the second. Cook would round out the scoring with a tally of her own with 5:04 remaining in the game. She had a game-high 8 shots on net.
Holy Cross controlled much of the game, registering 26 shots and 10 penalty corners against Siena's lone shot and solo corner. Heyde finished with 14 saves in 70 minutes of play.
The Crusaders will host Quinnipiac University on Friday, September 3 on the Hart Turf. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
