Providence, R.I. - Junior forward Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) scored the game's only goal late in the first half to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a hard-fought 1-0 non-conference victory over Brown on Wednesday afternoon at Warner Roof. With the win, Holy Cross snaps a three-game losing streak and improves to 8-9 overall (2-2 Patriot League), while the Bears fall to 6-8 on the season.
Welch recorded her Patriot League-leading 14th tally of the season at the 26:07 mark when she one-timed a pass from senior forward Jenna Cook (Walpole, Mass.), beating Brown goalie Kristen Hodavance for the 1-0 score.
Brown's best scoring chance came with less four minutes left in the game, when the Bears broke in on a three-on-two rush. The Bears' Ani Kazarian pulled Holy Cross freshman goalie Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) out of the cage, but Singleton recovered and was able to get to the ball and redirect it out of harm's way before the Bears could get a shot off.
Brown earned six penalty corners in the first 10:00 of play, and had an 8-1 penalty corner advantage for the game, but could not capitalize. The Bears also had a 10-6 shot advantage, including a 7-4 edge in the second half.
Singleton earned her first career win after making six saves on the day in her first career start, while Hodavance finished with four stops for Brown.
The Crusaders conclude the regular season with a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 29, against Lafayette in Easton, Pa.
Holy Cross is currently tied for third place in the league standings with Lehigh with identical 2-2 records. American and Bucknell have already clinched spots in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. Lafayette is 0-3 in league play this season. The top four teams qualify for the tournament.
