BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior forward Kristin Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) had a goal and an assist as the Holy Cross field hockey team edged Lehigh, 4-3, in Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Crusaders improve to 5-10 (1-3) while the Mountain Hawks fall to 3-12 (0-4 Patriot League).
The Crusaders struck early in the first half, at the 1:41 mark, Schulz scored first for Holy Cross, assisted by senior Jessie Cullen (Norwich, Vt.). Less than five minutes later, at the 6:13 mark, sophomore Kara Gonnerman (St. Louis, Mo.) scored an unassisted goal, putting the Crusaders ahead 2-0.
Less than three minutes later, at the 9:46 mark, sophomore Breezy Rush (Denville, N.J.) scored her first career goal with Holy Cross on an unassisted shot past Mountain Hawks' goalkeeper Jessica Miller.
At the 13:31 mark, the Crusaders took advantage of a penalty corner as Schulz passed the ball to sophomore Alanna Sikorski (Glen Gardner, N.J.), scoring the fourth Crusader goal of the half.
The Mountain Hawks' offense charged back to get within one goal of Holy Cross, but the Crusaders' defense held on for the 4-3 Patriot League victory. Kelly Fox and Lauren Cawley each had a goal and assist for Lehigh.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) made 13 saves while Miller had two and Lilia Stefaniwsky had three for the Mountain Hawks.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, October 29, hosting Brown with a game scheduled at 4:00 p.m.
