Worcester, Mass. - Junior Laura Cohen scored two goals and junior Tara Welch added a goal and an assist to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in Patriot League play, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Junior Susie Whelan assisted on each of the Crusaders' three goals on the afternoon, giving her nine helpers on the season.
Cohen opened the scoring just 3:02 into the contest when she drove the set-up pass off of a penalty corner into the back of the net for a 1-0 Holy Cross lead. Whelan and Welch were credited with assists on the play.
The Crusaders then took a 2-0 lead at the 20:56 mark after Cohen collected a pass from Whelan and beat Lehigh keeper Meghan Gove for the second time. Holy Cross kept the two goal lead through halftime.
In the second, Lehigh cut the deficit to one (2-1) when Jennifer Cochran scored a goal after a pass from Christy Smith at the 46:07 mark, but the Crusaders got an insurance goal from Welch at the 51:58 mark for the 3-1 win.
Kuhn made six saves on the day, while Gove finished with nine stops. The Crusaders enjoyed a 14-7 shot advantage and held the Mountain Hawks to zero penalty corners for the game.
The Crusaders are back at it again tomorrow, when they host Dartmouth College at 1:00 p.m. at the Hart Turf.
